Origin and background of the character (Lore)
Created by the Finnish novelist and illustrator Tove Jansson, Snufkin (sometimes translated as ‘The Wanderer’) is a free spirit who embodies the call of adventure and a love of solitude. Unlike the other inhabitants of the valley, who enjoy the cosy comfort of the big blue house, Snufkin spends his life travelling light, maintaining that becoming attached to material possessions only complicates life. Every year, when autumn sets in and the Moomin family prepares to hibernate, he folds up his tent, adjusts his old green hat and sets off alone to explore distant horizons to the south. His solitary adventures through forests, rivers and mountains deepen his wisdom and inner peace, making his return in spring an event celebrated and eagerly awaited by all his friends.
