Origin and lore

The Triforce is one of the fundamental artefacts of The Legend of Zelda universe. According to the mythology of Hyrule presented by Nintendo, the world was created by three goddesses: Din, the goddess of power, created the earth; Nayru, the goddess of wisdom, brought order; and Farore, the goddess of courage, created life. Before leaving the world, they left behind the sacred golden triangle formed of three elements: the Triforce.

This artefact possesses the power to grant the wish of whoever holds it, but its user must strike a balance between the three virtues of power, wisdom and courage. Otherwise, the Triforce may split into three separate fragments.

These three fragments are traditionally associated with the central characters of the saga: Ganondorf receives the Triforce of Power, Princess Zelda the Triforce of Wisdom, and Link the Triforce of Courage. This symbol thus directly links the three major figures of the series and has been a recurring element in the history of Hyrule since the earliest instalments of *The Legend of Zelda*.
