Origin and character lore
In Hayao Miyazaki’s eponymous masterpiece released in 1988, My Neighbour Totoro, the White Totoro — whose real name is ‘Chibi Totoro’ — is the smallest and youngest of the forest spirits (around 109 years old). Unlike his grey and blue companions, he possesses the unique power to become completely invisible at will to escape the gaze of humans. It is him that little Mei spots first as he runs discreetly through the tall grass, carrying a small bag of acorns on his back. His curiosity and clumsiness will unwittingly lead the little girl through the magical thickets to the secret lair of the great, sleeping Totoro.
