Character background and lore

Ajani Goldenmane is a Leonin from Naya, one of the fragments of the plane of Alara. Born with entirely white fur, he was long regarded as an outsider by his people. He nevertheless found his place alongside his brother Jazal, a respected leader whose death ignited Ajani’s Planeswalker spark.

Initially driven by anger and a desire for vengeance, Ajani gradually learns to use his powers to defend others. His abilities are primarily focused on healing, protecting and strengthening his allies. Wizards of the Coast describes him as a noble and compassionate hero, dedicated to protecting the weak and fighting oppression.

During his travels across the Multiverse, Ajani forms bonds with many other Planeswalkers, including Elspeth Tirel. Their friendship plays a central role in his story, particularly during their adventures on Theros and their confrontation with Xenagos, who has become a god.

Ajani is primarily associated with white magic, which symbolises order, community and protection. Some of his incarnations also utilise red or green magic, reflecting his anger, his warrior’s instinct and his connection to nature. In the card game, his abilities frequently restore life total, strengthen creatures or grant positive counters.

His axe, imposing stature and feline appearance make him a particularly formidable fighter, but his true strength lies in his loyalty and his willingness to support his companions.
