Origin and character background (Lore)
This statue is inspired by the film *The Horse Soldiers*, a Western directed by John Ford and released in 1959. In the film, John Wayne plays Colonel John Marlowe, a Union Army officer tasked with leading a cavalry unit into Confederate territory during the American Civil War. The plot is set against the backdrop of the Vicksburg Campaign of 1863.
The story is loosely based on a real historical event: Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson’s raid, carried out from 17 April to 2 May 1863 across the Mississippi. At the head of some 1,700 men, Grierson’s mission was to disrupt Confederate railways, bridges and supply lines in order to support General Ulysses S. Grant’s operations around Vicksburg. The character of John Marlowe incorporates several elements of this military operation whilst remaining a fictional creation.
Infinite Statue has therefore chosen to depict John Wayne in the image of a Union cavalryman from 1863, complete with his uniform, equipment and a plinth evoking the military context of the period. The piece serves as a tribute to the actor nicknamed ‘The Duke’, to his collaboration with John Ford, and to one of the great historical productions in his filmography.
