Origin and character lore
In *The Hobbit*, the golden buttons on Bilbo Baggins’ waistcoat symbolise his material comfort, his obsession with Shire etiquette and his peaceful life before his great journey. Everything changes during his psychological showdown with the creature Gollum in the depths of the Misty Mountains. After stumbling upon the One Ring by chance and winning the riddle contest, Bilbo must flee for his life. As he attempts to slip unseen through the Goblin exit guarded by sentries, he becomes stuck in the narrow crevice because of his bulky pockets. By forcing his way through, he manages to escape at the last moment, but at the cost of the magnificent golden buttons on his coat, which are torn off and scattered across the floor of the cave.
