Origin and world of the character
Tamatoa is a secondary antagonist from the 56th Disney Studios animated film, Vaiana: The Legend of the End of the World, released in 2016. The plot draws on the traditions and stories of Polynesian mythology, following the quest of a young girl determined to sail the ocean to save her native island. Tamatoa is a giant crab measuring around fifteen metres, belonging to the fictional species of monster crabs from Lalotai, the kingdom of subterranean monsters. Characterised by a pronounced pride and a sickly love of all that glitters, he accumulates countless treasures, jewels and golden objects on his shell, including the precious magic fishhook that the demigod Maui tries to recover in the course of the story.
