Origin and character background (Lore)
In the rich world of Middle-earth, Thorin Oakenshield is the grandson of King Thrór and the son of Thráin II, rulers of the immensely wealthy kingdom beneath the mountain of Erebor. Having witnessed the destruction of his homeland and the massacre of his people by the fearsome dragon Smaug, he was forced into exile and earned his legendary nickname ‘Oakenshield’ during the bloody Battle of Azanulbizar, where he used a simple oak branch to parry the blows of the Orc chieftain Azog the Defiler. Driven by a righteous desire to restore his lineage’s former glory, he orchestrated the famous quest for Erebor alongside the wizard Gandalf the Grey and the Hobbit burglar Bilbo Baggins. This sculpture immortalises this proud, courageous yet tragic warlord, whose fate is forever linked to the recapture of the Dwarves’ greatest treasure.
