Character background and universe (Lore)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie – Rebellion is the third feature film in the franchise and presents an original story following on from the events of the television series and the first two recap films. It was released in Japan on 26 October 2013.

At the start of the film, Bebe appears as a small creature living alongside Mami Tomoe. Mami treats her as a friend and a mascot, whilst Bebe joins the magical girls in their battles against creatures known as Nightmares.

However, her cheerful appearance and sometimes eccentric behaviour conceal a more complex identity. Bebe is linked to Charlotte, the Dessert Witch previously encountered in the original series. This witch is notably associated with cheese, which she seeks out with a particular obsession.

Bebe is in fact the form taken on by Nagisa Momoe, a former magical girl who has become part of the Law of the Cycle. Nagisa plays a part in the events of Rebellion alongside Sayaka Miki and Madoka Kaname, although she initially keeps her identity secret.

In her human form, Nagisa is a young girl capable of transforming into a magical girl. Her powers, weapons and magical manifestations are closely associated with desserts, bubbles and cheese, in keeping with her witch-like appearance.

The relationship between Bebe and Mami plays a significant role in this new reality. Mami, who is usually solitary, finds in the little creature a reassuring presence and a true companion. Bebe also seems deeply attached to her and seeks to protect her when the situation becomes dangerous.

Like many elements of Rebellion, Bebe plays on the contrast between a cute appearance and a far more mysterious nature. Her colourful, rounded design fits perfectly into the Fluffy Puffy range, whilst her backstory evokes the complex links between magical girls, witches and the Law of the Cycle.
