Origin and character lore
In the horror universe conceived by Stephen King and brought to life on the big screen, “It” is a malevolent, shape-shifting cosmic entity millions of years old, lurking in the sewers of the town of Derry in Maine. Awakening every 27 years to feed on children, the entity primarily takes the form of Pennywise the dancing clown to lure its prey before transforming into their worst nightmares. Feeding on the terror of its victims – which it claims makes them ‘tastier’ – it signals its approach with a red balloon floating in the air.
