Character’s origin and universe

Zack Fair is a member of Shinra’s SOLDIER corps and the main protagonist of Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII–. Originally from Gongaga, he joins the organisation with the ambition of becoming a hero and rises to the rank of First-Class SOLDIER.

Zack is characterised by an enthusiastic, optimistic and spontaneous personality. Unlike many of the more aloof or disillusioned members of SOLDIER, he retains an idealistic view of heroism and seeks to protect those around him.

His main mentor is Angeal Hewley, a First-Class SOLDIER who teaches him the importance of honour and pride. Angeal is also the first known owner of the Crushing Sword, a weapon passed down through his family and rarely used in order to preserve its symbolic value.

Following the events involving Angeal and Genesis Rhapsodos, Zack inherits the weapon. It then becomes a symbol of his responsibilities, his personal growth and the values his mentor instilled in him. Square Enix officially presents Zack as a former companion of Sephiroth who received the Crushing Sword from the man who had trained him.

During his missions, Zack meets Aerith Gainsborough in the church in the slums of Sector 5. A relationship gradually develops between them, based on their shared optimism and the moments of calm they share away from Shinra operations.

Zack also becomes close to Cloud Strife, then a mere foot soldier for the company. The two young men take part in several missions together, notably in Nibelheim, where they accompany Sephiroth whilst he inspects a Mako reactor.

The discovery of the experiments being carried out by Shinra causes Sephiroth to turn his back on humanity. During the Nibelheim incident, Zack attempts to stop him but is seriously injured. Cloud then intervenes and manages to hurl Sephiroth into the depths of the reactor.

Zack and Cloud are captured by Professor Hojo, who uses them as test subjects. After several years in captivity, Zack manages to escape and carries Cloud – who is severely affected by Mako poisoning – to the outskirts of Midgar.

During this journey, Zack looks after his companion and seeks to build a new life with him as mercenaries. However, Shinra’s forces catch up with them before they reach their destination. Zack single-handedly takes on an entire army to protect Cloud and ultimately passes on the Crushing Sword and his legacy to him.

This relationship profoundly shapes Cloud’s identity. His fragmented memories, his exposure to mako and the trauma of Zack’s disappearance lead the young man to unconsciously incorporate certain aspects of his friend’s journey into his own personality. Square Enix emphasises that the missions shared with Zack have a decisive influence on the man Cloud subsequently becomes.

Following on from *Final Fantasy VII Remake* and *Rebirth*, Zack’s fate takes a different turn from that of the original story. After surviving a clash that should have been fatal, he reaches Midgar with Cloud and sets out to find Aerith. This situation places the character at the centre of the mysteries surrounding different realities and the altering of destiny.
