Character background and universe

Yuffie Kisaragi is a young shinobi from Wutai, a nation that was once at war with the Shinra Company. Energetic, proud and particularly interested in materia, she is determined to restore her country’s lost power and prestige.

In Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Yuffie infiltrates Midgar with her partner Sonon Kusakabe. Their mission is to steal a so-called ‘ultimate’ materia developed by Shinra and to deal a symbolic blow to the corporation responsible for Wutai’s decline.

However, the plan ends in failure. Yuffie fails to retrieve the materia and loses Sonon during the confrontation. This experience leaves a deep mark beneath her enthusiastic demeanour and constant banter.

In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, she crosses paths with Cloud and his companions as they pursue Sephiroth beyond Midgar. Square Enix portrays her as a member of an elite group of shinobi, who gradually joins the team after beginning to feel the weight of loneliness.

Yuffie remains, however, driven by her own goals. She is still keen to collect Materia, support Wutai and find a way to resist Shinra. Her enthusiasm for magic orbs becomes a recurring source of comedy, but also reflects the strategic importance she attaches to them.

In combat, Yuffie primarily uses a large shuriken. She can wield it as a melee weapon, throw it at a distance and recall it to herself. This versatility allows her to switch quickly between close-quarters attacks and ranged combat.

Her ninjutsu also allows her to alter the elemental nature of her attacks. She can thus exploit an enemy’s weaknesses without having to cast a traditional spell, whilst her aerial manoeuvres and rapid techniques make it difficult for opponents to counter-attack.

Behind her self-assurance, Yuffie remains a young fighter grappling with the consequences of a conflict that is beyond her control. The loss of Sonon, the tensions between Shinra and Wutai, and her fear of failure lend greater depth to a character often portrayed solely as enthusiastic or interested in Materia.

Her travel sickness is another recurring trait. Despite her exceptional agility in the field, she struggles to cope with travel by boat or in certain vehicles, which regularly leads to comical situations during the journey.
