Red XIII is depicted as a large feline with a stocky build, deliberately adapted to the gentle proportions of the Adorable Arts range. His coat blends various shades of red, orange and beige, with lighter areas around the muzzle, chest and inside the ears.

The head is crowned with a dark red mane sculpted into long spikes. A second row of tufts runs down his back, evoking the character’s wild appearance. His ears are adorned with several golden rings, whilst two ornaments made of blue and white feathers are attached behind his head.

His face retains Red XIII’s characteristic markings. A scar runs across his closed right eye, whilst several red streaks appear on his cheeks. In his standard form, the character has a serious and attentive expression, with his mouth slightly ajar.

His limbs are adorned with wide golden bracelets featuring geometric patterns. Several black tattoos are also depicted on his body, notably the Roman numeral XIII accompanied by a stylised sun on his left foreleg and angular patterns on his thighs. The official images also show additional inscriptions and ornamentation around the head and back.

The long red tail ends in a translucent yellow and orange flame. This colourful effect is one of the figurine’s most striking features and serves as a reminder that Red XIII’s tail burns continuously, without harming its owner. Square Enix officially describes the character as a talking animal, with scarlet fur, sharp claws and a flaming tail.

Character’s origin and universe

Red XIII is an intelligent, cat-like creature capable of speaking and reasoning like a human being. His real name is Nanaki, but Professor Hôjô gave him the designation Red XIII whilst he was held captive in the Shinra laboratories.

Cloud, Barret, Tifa and Aerith meet him in the Shinra building in Midgar. Hôjô is attempting to use him in his experiments, but the group manages to free him. Red XIII then decides to accompany them on their journey out of the city.

His appearance is reminiscent of a cross between a lion, a wolf and a big cat. He has red fur, great agility, powerful claws and a lifespan far greater than that of humans. His tail is constantly surrounded by a flame, a feature that is one of his main distinguishing characteristics.

Despite his deep voice and thoughtful demeanour, Red XIII is still young by the standards of his species. He frequently tries to appear more mature than he actually is, particularly when interacting with Cloud and the other members of the party.

His journey takes him back to Cosmo Canyon, the community where he grew up under the protection of Bugenhagen. This scholar studies the planet, the cycle of life and the dangers caused by the exploitation of mako energy.

Red XIII initially harbours resentment towards his father, Seto, whom he believes abandoned the canyon during an attack. However, he discovers that his father sacrificed himself to protect the entrance to the valley, immobilised by poisoned arrows whilst preventing the attackers from reaching the community.

This revelation profoundly transforms Nanaki. He realises that his father was not a coward, but a guardian who gave his life to defend his people. Red XIII then resolves to honour his legacy and continue the journey with renewed determination.

In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Red XIII becomes a fully playable member of the party. His combat style relies on speed, physical attacks and a ‘Vengeance’ system that rewards parries and defence before unleashing more powerful moves.

The character also plays an important role in the team’s dynamics. His knowledge of the planet and Cosmo Canyon offers a perspective different from that of humans, whilst his interactions gradually reveal a more youthful, curious and sometimes playful side than his initial demeanour might suggest.

The smiling design of this Adorable Arts figure directly reflects this duality. The serious face depicts the proud and cautious guardian encountered in Midgar, whilst the cheerful expression recalls Nanaki, the young inhabitant of Cosmo Canyon who gradually rediscovers his true personality alongside his companions.
