Character background and lore

In the dark and fantastical world of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Tanjiro Kamado is a young charcoal merchant whose life is turned upside down the day his family is slaughtered by a demon, leaving only his little sister Nezuko as the sole survivor, herself transformed into a creature of the night. Driven by unwavering brotherly love, he joins the Demon Slayer Corps to find a cure and restore her humanity.
Trained by the former Pillar Sakonji Urokodaki on Mount Sagiri, Tanjiro learns to master the "Water Breathing", a fluid and adaptable fighting style divided into ten main movements (later eleven). This discipline allows him to control his breathing to increase his physical strength tenfold and manipulate energy flows in the form of devastating waves. Combining pure kindness, a superhuman sense of smell capable of detecting his enemies’ “opening moves”, and a keen sense of justice, Tanjiro embodies hope in the face of the growing darkness.
