He arranged for Sirius Black to be blamed for the murders instead of him by faking his own death. He remained transformed into a rat for many years for fear of retribution. He was adopted by a family of wizards (the Weasleys) to keep in touch with the magical world and to watch for a possible return of his master Lord Voldemort.
