Asterix, originally Asterix the Gaul, is a Franco-Belgian comic book series created on October 29, 1959, by French writer René Goscinny and French illustrator Albert Uderzo in issue #1 of the French magazine Pilote. After René Goscinny's death in 1977, Albert Uderzo continued the series alone, then passed the torch in 2013 to Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad. The series is set in 50 BC (shortly after the Roman conquest) and features a small Gaulish village in Armorica that continues the fight against the invaders thanks to a magic potion prepared by the druid, a drink that grants superhuman strength to whoever drinks it. The main characters are the warrior Asterix and the menhir deliveryman Obelix, tasked by their village with thwarting the Romans' plans or going to the aid of anyone who requests help against the Roman Republic. Published in Pilote magazine from 1959 to 1973, the series was also released in hardcover albums. The first twenty-four albums were published by Dargaud, then from 1998 by Hachette, and finally by Albert René for the remaining ten. Cumulative sales of the albums, translated into one hundred and seven languages, total 350 million copies, making it the best-selling European comic book series in the world. The series is primarily humorous and mainly parodies contemporary French society through its stereotypes and regionalisms, as well as emblematic traditions and customs of foreign countries. Repetitive humor is very prevalent, notably in the pirates' shipwreck. The drawing style is semi-realistic, heavily inspired by the Marcinelle school.
